Whites Landing Cruise August 8-10

Our annual Whites Landing cruise is nearly upon us. It is scheduled for August 8-10. We at The Catalina Experience are looking forward to hosting this event, and we would appreciate any advance notice you may be able to give regarding your plans to join us.

The camp orders supplies about a week in advance for such events, and we plan staffing accordingly. If you need a place to stay, please contact Jason or Michelle at or simply call (310) 510-2402.

Our usual plan is for a pot-luck dinner Friday night and then the camp is open for meal service breakfast on Saturday through lunch on Sunday. Please let us know if you are planning to take any meals at the camp, and be sure to bring something for your party to grill Friday evening on the big BBQ Tom Gleason made for us, and maybe bring a side dish as well.

We charge $8 for breakfast, $10 for lunch and $12 for the Saturday night dinner. 8-man tent-cabins rent for $60/night. We waive our traditional per person occupancy fees for CBYC, so you need not spend a dime if you choose not to. If you bring your own tent, you can even camp there for free.

CBYC will be setting up a bar and I think Gray or Carolyn are working on getting some entertainment for Saturday evening.

As usual, all of our waterfront toys are available to the club to use free of charge, and you are welcome to bring to shore your own beverages or picnic meals. We have smaller, single family grills available on the beach, and we are happy to provide briquettes if you need them.

There is a good anchorage just outside the mooring area if you have at least 300’ of ground tackle. Moorings rent by the night via Two Harbors Enterprises, and they can be assigned via marine VHF channel 9 once you reach the landing. Just call “Whites Landing Harbor Patrol,” give them your length and type and he will assign you a mooring. There is more information about mooring here:

The waypoint for Whites Landing is 118º22.11’W, 33º23.5’N. The course out of Alamitos Bay is 196º magnetic, and the distance is about 24 nautical miles.

I hope many of you can make this cruise. It’s always a good time. Please feel free to email me with any questions about the camp, mooring or anchoring.

See you there!

Sailing Program Debut a Big Success

Sunday morning, July 20, several of our club members participated in the first session of a weekly sailing program began by Terry Swney, Tom Boise and Joe Connell. Teens and adults both enjoyed the benefit of Joe’s and Terry’s experience as they learned the finer points of small boat sailing. Terry encourages the membership to bring the kids and grandchildren down to the marina next Sunday for more sailing fun. Donations of small sailing craft such as sabots are encouraged. Thank you Terry, Dick Perkins and Gray Lange for allowing the program to borrow your crafts!
